Abstract:
The martyrologia are painted in the Byzantine churches as "everyday" scenes and the saints and their torturers and executioners lookequally beatutiful and have the same expression. Perhaps because thesetortures were punischments according to the Roman Law and as suchthey were foreseen and widely practiced in Byzantium. The torturerswere usually soldiers. So theoretically any Byzantine subject couldsuffer the same tortures as punishment or could be ordered to executethem. In this way the great paedagogical value of these scenes, aboutwhich many texts speak, may be considered and in another way.
