The church of SS. George and Charalambos at Episcopi near Ierapetra, wasoriginally a tripanite Byzantine bath, from which the north and the centralroom have been preserved. The conversion took place during the Venetianera, possibly the 16th century. A new nave, dedicated to St. Charalambos tookthen the place of the ruined south room of the bath.The decoration of the façades of the monument, that is blind arcades withthe recessed brick technique, unglazed miniature cups with quatrefoil lips(φιαλοστόμια), incisions on the plaster to imitate ashlar blocks and the form ofthe dome, as well as the similarities with other middle Byzantine baths (as atKaisariani, Dervenossalesi and Sparta) could date the monument in theeleventh century.The excavation, partly carried out in 1981, pointed out that the digging ofsome tombs in the first decades of our century, have been disastrous for someparts of the monumen
