Abstract:
The carved marble closure slabs described in this paperbelong to the Byzantine Museum sculpture collectionand are dated to the Middle Byzantine period. They areexamples of the type which has a decorative designconsisting of a lozenge inscribed in a rectangular frame. This motif, a survival from the Early Christian periodderived originally from wood-carving, was elaborated inthe Middle Byzantine period. Dependence on thetechniques of wood-carving now gives way to a highlystylized ornamental treatment. The central lozenge iscombined with a variety of decorative motifs such asrosettes, crosses, roundels and sun-wheels, and isinterlaced with the rectangular frame at the points ofcontact. Most of these slabs come from Attica. They aredecorated in relief, and drills have been used on some ofthem. Although the basic decorative design is the sameon all of them, there are differences in its treatmentwhich enable the various pieces to be dated to the ninth, tenth and eleventh centuries.
