Abstract:
In summer 1990, ruins of a building and moveablefinds were uncovered on a plot at the intersection of34-36 Deliyanni and Gallias Sts. in Volos.The structural remains are as follows: A fountain, asmall well, three conduits, a masonry cistern, a marblefloor, a row of piers, a colonnade, and a wall. Themoveable finds include: marble plaques and stylobate,part of a cornice, a small pier, a colonnette, a balustradepanel, a marble column base, fragments of a columnTo μαρμαρεπένδυτο περίστυλο αίθριο καλύπτεται σήμερα από επταώροφη σύγχρονη οικοδομή, η ανέγερσητης οποίας στέρησε το Βόλο από ένα σημαντικό γιατην πόλη, αλλά και για την ευρύτερη περιοχή τηςΣτερεάς Ελλάδος, χριστιανικό μνημείο, μάρτυρα τηςύπαρξης σ' αυτή τη θέση ακμαίου παλαιοχριστιανικού οικισμού.37. These were architectural members which onceadorned a large secular or religious building.The composition of the excavation finds and comparison of the building with many other known examplesleads to the conclusion that this was a peristyled atriumof a basilica with an octagonal fountain in the centre,surrounded by an enclosure wall. It dates to the end ofthe fourth and beginning of the fifth century A.D.
