Abstract:
The church of St Athanasios (dimensions 6.60 x 5.85 m.) is of a simple four-columned cross-in-square type with a dome. Initially it had a narthex. Noteworthy features are: the irregular ground plan, the wide semi-hexagonal sanctuary conch, the double doorway between the naos and the narthex, and the formation of a horseshoe arch above the lintel of the north door. Both the architecture and the scant remnants of wall-paintings suggest date in the late twelfth or rather the early decades of the thirteenth century.
