Abstract:
This article discusses iconographic peculiarities encountered in the depiction of the Stylite saints in monuments belonging to the artistic production of the School of Northwestern Greece, one of the most important trends in the painting of the sixteenth century. These consist of the rare iconographic element of the brick-built column and the dangling leg full of sores of St Simon the Stylite. The roots of these two iconographic elements and their diffusion in Post-Byzantine art and Melchitic icons are discussed
