Abstract:
The present condition (2006) of the mosaics on the great eastern arch of St Sophia is presented. Recently (exact date unknown) part of the plaster with the architects Fossati brothers had covered the mosaics has fallen, resulting in the loss of tesserae hut leaving in situ the fresco layer upon which they were inserted. The figures of the Virgin and the Baptist were revealed. Their shapes and colouring confirm the accuracy of Paul Durand’s drawings and information, which the author had presented in a previous article (ΔΧΑΕ ΙΓ΄, 1998), pp. 307-313)
