Abstract:
The church of St. Paraskeve in Argoules, Sfakia was painted at the beginning of the 14th century by two artists. The sanctuary was decorated by a conservative painter, who adopts the more archaic artistic tendencies of the end of the 13th century. The nave, on the other hand, was decorated by a painter who adopted elements of Palaiologan painting and is identified with Michail Veneris, to whom other painted churches of western Crete have been attributed as well. The iconographic program does not have any peculiarities. Out of the few representations that have survived, the scenes of the martyrdoms of St Paraskeve and the representation of the Archangel Michael on the north wall of the church are of special interest.
