Abstract:
Three of the Italo-Byzantine Exultet Manuscripts, Μοntecassino 1, (1000-1050), Gaeta 1, (1000-1050), MS Lat. 2, John Rylands Libr., preserve representations of the Nativity of Christ, in which bees are depicted busy in their beehives. This iconographic theme is unique and very symbolic since it is directly related to passages of the hymn relating the bees to the Virgin and indirectly related to the foundation of the dogma of the Virgin Mary’s virginity.
