Abstract:
The purpose of this paper is to look at some of the effects of changes in China's political set-up on China's overall economic performance, and trade between China and Australia. In Section 1 of the paper we will review the broad direction economic policy took under the dominating influence of Mao Zedong from 1949 to 1976. Section 2 reviews Post-Mao policies - i.e. the policies pursued under the stewardship of Deng Xiaoping. Here we will see how significant changes in domestic and international economic relations have helped generate a considerable increase in China's growth. Section 3 looks at the quite remarkable changes in the underlying pattern of trade between Australia and China, as China moves inexorably towards industrialisation; while Section 4 focuses on the mix of markets and government meddling that has been apparently responsible for China's economic development during the 1980s. Conclusions are drawn in Section 5.
