Abstract:
In this article we argue against the view that slavery does not exist in the «Ideal» state of Plato's Republic. We show that Plato supported warmly the institution of slavery considering it entirely justified from political, social, intellectual, psychological and moral peint of view, and, therefore, absolutely necessary and beneficial to both the slave himself and the community as a whole. In the «ideal» state Plato could have avoided introducing the institution of slavery, not for any other reason, but only because tasks carried out by slaves in the ordinary states of his time, as well as in the «second best» state of his L aw s, had been undertaken by the members of the third class. There are, however, several strong indications and above all clear evidence that leave no roon< for doubt that Plato decided finally to introduce slavery in this «ideal» state.
