Abstract:
The name είρων, from which the abstract term ειρωνεία was formed later, first occurs in Aristophanes' Clauds (v. 449), where it is used of a character skilled in every kind of unscrupulous trickery : the origin and the primary meaning of the words are still unknown. In classical times, people felt irony mainly : (a) as d i a l e c t i c a l manner, which is, in its plain form, a sort of pretended ignorance in order to provoke argument (Socratic irony), ( b ) as a kind of understarement and self—depreciation that was frequently used in comedy, as an antithesis to boastfulness, and (c) as a mode of speech (rhetorical or verbal irony), in which one meaning is stated and another, usually antithetical, is intended.
