Abstract:
Until novi Modern Greek idioms found in the northern Péloponnèse have been amongst those least studied by linguists, mainly because there hat been no cataloguing of these terms. The author of the study presented here has catalogued Β large number of words in the Corinthian idiom, he has classified these and studiet their etymology, and classified the phonetic and morphological aspects of these idioms. In its original form this study was entered into a competition ( 1957) under the aegis of the Academy of Athens Institute of Linguistics, and was awarded jirst prize. An expanded, and completely reworked version of this study has been completed, and will probably appear in book form. From the present study it is apparent that the principal characteristics of the idioms which have been studied by the author are ; the pronounced palio-dentals (κε, κι = τσε, τσι), the Palatals σ, ζ, ξ ( f f i = s h i ) and γκ (γκι = τζι), the preservation of the original pronounciation of the Classical υ ( άχιουρα, νεροχιούτης), the more common pronounciation of ε like ι, aud ο like ου (e. g. ψικαστήρα, άπουπάνω) than in the southern sections, the eommoner occurrence of the atonal i (Άμερτσή), and ou (παιδόπλο, Άδαμόπλος) etc. The author endeavours either to explain these occurrences, or to relate them to others
