Abstract:
Isocrates’ education is fundamentally different from that of Plato although there are some similarities in the details between them. The ideal of the former is «λόγος» and «δόξα» and the ideal of the latter is «διάλογος» and «επιστήμη». We can find allusions in their works to each other indicating their differences and generally their relationship ; of these allusions that in «Phaedrus» 278 Eff includes Isocrates by name with a eulogy for him and a prophecy for his future. Is it a real eulogy without any tinge of irony? The scholars are divided into three groups. Some of them say that it is a eulogy without any trace of irony, others insist that there exists a cutting scorn on that prophecy and a third group, between the other two, think that the above passage from «Phaedrus» includes a combination of praise and irony. In my opinion it is a real praise but not without an ironical tinge. Plato expected that Isocrates would incline towards his paideia because at the beginning of Isocrates' career there were some common points. But by the time «Phaedrus» was written Isocrates' paideia was differentiated from that of Plato so that the latter comprises Socrates' prophecy about Isocrates with an ironical tone.
