Abstract:
A Coptic translation of Plato's Republic (588B —589B) is incorporated among the Gnostic and Hermetic treatises of the Nag—Hammadi library. (Codex VI, treatise No 5). This is a rather free translation of the Republic (588B — 589B) and it contains many misrenderings of the Greek text. The dialect used is the sahidic with sub - achmimic influence. The translation must have been done sometime before the middle of the fourth century in Upper Egypt. It appears that the reason for the Gnostic interest in that Platonic passage is related to the tripartite Psychology of Plato, wich supports Gnostic views on certain anthropological question.
