Comments on Menander's Perikeiromene and Epitrepontes

Abstract:
The stemma of Perikeiromene, which combines the views of Capps, Allinson and Gomme, appears on page 113. However, this is inconsistent with the Attic legal conventions for the stage. An arrangement according to Attic law has been attempted as the stemma shows on p. 115. Moreover, the place of the comedy, the fact that the old lady (γραυς) gave (δίδωσι) Glykera to Polemon (v. 130), and her behavior as a criminal (μοιχεία) are in contradiction with the Athenian legal institutions. Menander manipulates legal premises to meet, the requirements of dramatic effect and plot. In Epitrepontes (v. 313—317) according to the facts Syriskos could not legally emphasize the time (τότε...), because this ccntradicts his later behavior. Hence the script of codd. «τούτο . . . λέγων» is correct.
