Abstract:
The authenticity of Xenophon's Apologia has been repeatedly questioned in modern times, although it was accepted in ancient. Much discussed has also been the date of its composition and if it preceded or followed the other socratic writings of Xenophon. Another subject of controversy has been if it depends on the Apologia of Platon. The present author, after discussing the above subjects, agrees with those who accept the genuineness of Xenophon's Apologia. He further sustains, that it is probably contem porary with the other socratic writings of Xenophon and in any case of late date, perhaps composed 30 or more years after the death of Socrates. As to its relations to the platonic Apologia, the author believes that it is altogether dependent on it, because Xenophon's aim was to correct it and over—emphasize its arguments.
