Abstract:
During the period after the Greek war of independence a remarkable philosophical movement in Greece and, particularly, in the region of the Ionian Islands, took place, which, although it has been the outcome of the contemporary European philosophy, was original and independent. As far as the Ionian Islands are concerned, this movement led to an intellectual achievement and to the establishement of the Ionian Academy. P. Brailas - Armenis, one of the most prominent thinkers of the Ionian Islands during the last century, was distinguished for his intellectual and political activity. Brailas builds up his own philosophy on the notion of being. Various influences are discernible in his doctrine, but the most important derives from the eclecticism of V. Cousin. He taught philosophy in the Ionian Academy for ten years and was involved in all branches of philosophy. His book Elements of theoretical and practical philosophy contains the substance and the bases of his teaching. Through his philosophical works and his teaching he has exercized a considerable influence to numerous generations of students. Through his philosophical work he has contributed to the enrichment of the Ionian Islands' philosophical thought and has helped in the development of modern Greek philosophy. One has therefore to acklowledge that he is the most remarkable theoritical thinker within the Greek world during the 19th century.
