The term «philosophy» in Isocrates' works and the relevant aspects in Plato's and Aristotle's.

Abstract:
In Isocrates' works the term «philosophy» appears with two meanings : 1 ) culture and 2) rhetoric. In both cases Isocrates gives a practical tinge to the worb. Moreover his «philosophy» is limited in comparison with Plato's philosophy since the former thinks that there is not absolute knowledge but conjectures, the latter believes that trully the soul can reach the absolute knowledge, the sight of Ideas. Aristotle's philosophy does not agree either with Isocrates' or with Plato's. There are however some points where we can find an inclination towars Isocrates' utilitarian. As far as the second meaning of the term «philosophy» (rhetorie) is concerned Plato rejects rhetoric without dialectic and does not consider it as an art but as an experience for pleasure. Aristotle's conception on rhetoric lies between the other two but inclines rather towards Isocrates' aspect.
