Abstract:
The paper will consider the following issues: (i)outline of theories underlying the major research traditions on diffusion? the main contention will be that the "adoption perspective" or demand-focussing paradigm has lost its dominance, after two decades of joint applications in most disciplines? (ii)a summary review of simulation techniques adopted in economics and geography, for space-time diffusion paths, evaluating their rationale and limits? (iii)a detailed discussion of the stilization of diffusion processes following the three main theorerical approaches: the demonstrationimitation theory (describing an information-constrained process), the bounded rationality theory (with reference to a technology-constrained process of learning and expectations), the rational expectations theory (allowing maximization of expected profits under conditions of technological risk, when radical uncertainty is ruled out)? (iv)the proposal of a new theoretical approach, drawing on recent research in economics and geography of diffusion ("in search of a new paragigm")? v)an outline of a dynamic model of economic and spatial diffusion encompassing most previous models as special cases, with reference to the previous theoretical discussion on diffusion determinants, to a taxonomy of diffusion processes (by industry and innovation type), and to the application of the simplifying properties of dynamic logit models to this subject.
