Abstract:
In this paper an attempt will be made to outline the major trans informations in the distribution of investment and employment by region in the UK. Three main phases will be identified. Until 1958 the traditional industrial regions of Britain were relatively prosperous. Growth was fast by historical standards but new industries were largely concentrated in the Midlands and South East. In 1958-74 several factors predominated. With crisis of the old industrial sectors new jobs were diverted to the assisted areas. At the same time however it was increasingly realised that British growth, while fast, was by international standards low. After 1974 an unparallelled deindustrialisation of Britain was set in motion. How can one explain these developments; In the paper an attempt will be made to show the relevance of the regulation approach and of some work done in Britain on long waves and structural change. This particular set of concepts is, however, not just of historical significance. In the conclusion we shall try to draw out some of the implications of this approach for discussions of ways out of the crisis. These conclusions will form a backdrop for an evaluation of the strategies and policies at present being proposed by different elements of the political class.
