Relocation of manifacturing and technological change

In this paper I will discuss the processes of production and exchange activities within metropolitan areas of devejoped countries. Especially I will focus on the forms of restructuring which emerge after the crisis of fordist organization of work and the introduction of new technologies in the labour process. In the first section I will examine the relations between technical, social and spatial division of labour, considering that this articulation transfers the changes of the labour process in the spatial level. In the second section I will try to make clear how new technology is defined today, in which industrial branches innovations are concentrated, and which form of technical division of labour occurs. In the third and main section of the paper, I will describe the metropolitan spatiality which emerges from the mobility of innovation firms, from the locational choises of R+D, and from the reorganizasion of non-productive activities. The main conclusions concern the new spatial structure of the metropolis and the spatial aspects of the "overqualification- disqualification" process.
