Abstract:
The excavation of the tholos tomb at Symbola, ten kilometres north of Komotene was carried out this year. The tomb, dated to the 3rd century B.C., faces south and consists of a dromos, an antechamber and a main chamber. The dromos was made of pebbles and its eastern part was covered with a ridge roof, while three vertical walls blocked the access to the tomb. Both the antechamber and the main chamber are built with poros stones and are covered with a dome. The façade and the inner face of the walls are coated with coloured plasters as were the klinai inside the chamber, which were arranged in a Γ-shape. Both the doors of the antechamber and the chamber were of marble. Fragments of archaizing female terracotta figurines, a pseudo-amphoriskos, a relief bronze Silenus head were found inside the tomb, while a marble stele of the 5thcentury B.C. decorated with a volute was incorporated in the roof. The tumulus of the tomb and the adjacent area were used as a cemetery in the late Roman and the Byzantine period. Finally, the great quantity of the sherds found in the filling probably came from a Hellenistic settlement located in the surround ding area.
