Abstract:
The remains of a Justinianian basilica with a nave, two aisles and a transept wing terminating into two apses were discovered at Synaxis near Maroneia. A chapel with a coloured floor mosaic was attached to the northern side of the porch, while a vaulted grave was recovered beneath the southern part of the tranept wing. The eastern part of the basilica comprising the apse and the transept wing, were built with marble removed from earlier monuments of the 2nd century A.D. Such buildings are related to the worship of heroes. A monastery of the post-Byzantine period was built on the ruins of the early Christian basilica. A complex of rooms occupied the northern aisle of the basilica, while the southern aisle and the southern wing was occupied by a series of rooms probably used as "guestrooms”, storerooms for tools used in agriculture, οψοφυλάκιο, kitchen and dining room. Finally, a courtyard with the chapel of the monastery in the eastern part occupied the nave.
