Abstract:
The research at Ag. Charalambos of Maroneia started in 1974 and yielded significant finds. A damaged prothesis apse 5.5 m. deep in the ground was the most significant: it was painted with an aniconic representation of a cross decorated with stones. During the last three years the excavation yielded a Byzantine church of the11 th-12th century, 2.50 m. deep in the ground. It contained a throne, being probably the cathedral of Maroneia. The damaged apse with the mural belongs to an older church upon which the church of the 11 th-12th century was founded. The older church of the 9th century with the interesting painting has not yet been excavated, due to the thick fills. The abbreviations [I C] XC N K at the corners of the cross mark the everlasting glory of crucified Christ, while the whole composition reminds a passage of Apocalypse (Ap. 22.2)
