Abstract:
The excavation of the Early Iron Age settlement by the village of Rizia in the province of Hebros aimed at the location of architectural remains in the first square of the trench and the research of two more trial trenches. Four pits cut into the hard natural ground were discovered in Square HlOd. Their bottom is circular or elliptical, while their walls resemble those of a pithos. During a trial trench, part of a carefully made floor was found in Square Ξ12Ι>1. This consists of two layers: a) one of pebbles below and b) another layer above with purereddish clay on the surface. Two pits completed the number of the constructions. The bins of the whole excavation contained sherds, animal bones, remains of clay, and finally, clay and stone objects. They may have been used originally as storage-pits and they probably imply that houses made of posts must have existed in the nearby area. The pottery consists of sherds from amphorae, oinochoai, phialai, mugs and crater-shaped vases. Their rich decoration is incised, grooved, and mainly consists of impressed geometric motifs. Similar pottery has been found in the sites of the EarlyIron Age in W. Thrace, Bulgaria and S. Rumany (Prenicevo, Babadag etc.). It seems that according to the new dating of Troy VIIB2 and the recent evidence from the excavations in E. Macedonia, Thrace and Bulgaria, the impressed pottery was popularin the 8th century B.C. The spread of the grooved and the impressed pottery together with Buckelkeramikhas been connected with the spread of Thracian tribes from S. Rumany towards the plains of river Hebros, Mt. Rodope and Troada. The related problems are many and can be illuminated with future excavations in the area of S. Balkan.
