Abstract:
The basilica of the Museum of Philippi is the third most important basilica of the ancient city. Today it is an oblong three-aisled basilica with a narthex, having a transept in the eastern part, an atrium in the western part and other subsidiary buildings by the northern part of the church. This plan was created during the intensive building activities in the second quarter of the 6th century, influenced by the artistic achievements of the capital. There is evidence that the part of the church located east from the southern aisle of the transept was reused after the destruction of the basilica and the other Early Christian buildings of the city by an earthquake in the early 7th century. Furthermore, the northern subsidiary buildings of the church were also used in the mid-Byzantine period (10th century): the northern subsidiary building was transformed into a chapel, still accessible through the narthex of the basilica. This chapel and the narthex were also reused in the 12th century, after the destruction of the Byzantine church, for cemetery.
