Abstract:
The extra muros basilica of the late antique city of Dion in southern Macedonia is situated outside the city not far from its south wall. It is a typical three-aisled basilica with a narthex and an atrium. The arched colonnades of the nave stand on a built stylobate. The columns come from earlier buildings; they differ in length and have ionic capitals with separate imposts. The church communicates with the narthex by three openings, one at each aisle, the middle opening being wider than the lateral. The nave is laid with mosaic, while the aisles and narthex are laid with brick-tiles. The Berna is separated from the nave by a Π-shaped chancel screen with marble chancel slabs. The interior of the apse is lined with a semicircular synthronon; two side benches stand on either side of the altar table. The Berna floor is laid with marble opus-sectile. Built benches run along the north and south walls of the church. The atrium has three stoas supported by arched colonnades with ionic capitals and separate imposts. The floor of the stoas is laid in parts with brick tiles, but the greater part is laid with pressed earth. A large vaulted tomb was found under the east end of the north aisle. It was olderthan the church, but its use was also contemporary with it. Three smaller tombs were found under the south stoa of the atrium. Two of them are cist tombs while the third is barrel vaulted. Its interior was decorated with paintings of large crosses and birds in a country back ground. At least one of the cists antedates the atrium. All of them had received multiple inhumations. The chronological evidence provided by coins and the stylistic comparison of the nave mosaic dates the building of the church and narthex in the early second quarter of the fifth century AD; the atrium was added shortly afterwards. There is evidence for a major restoration after an earthquake in the middle sixth century. The building survived at least for some time after the restorations.
