Abstract:
The salvage excavation at field no. 575 of Pydna (Makrygialos) yielded part of the Byzantine settlement of Kitros: bath, hotel (katagogeion) with a courtyard, walls of the 12th century houses, a small temple of a cemetery, a cemetery and two kilns. These are located 180 m. south from the castle, on the southern bank of the stream. The bath is a rectangular building (7.50x2.90 m.), with walls preserved up to1.10 m. high and has two phases. The southern part, consists of the praefurnium, a small hot room equipped with clay pipes for water supply under the floor and a small cistern. In the second phase, the bath was extended northwards and incorporated atepidarium and two cisterns, one across the western wall and another across the northern. A rectangular building (15.30x5m.) was excavated west from the bath; its oblong plan and association with the bath suggest that it was probably a hotel(katagogeion). Two other walls are also annexed, probably used for the courtyard and the stable. Both the bath and the hotel were destroyed or deserted in the late 12th or early 13trh centuries, due to the besiege of Kitros by the Francs. The ruins of the hotel were used afterwards for a pottery workshop, while part of its courtyard was turned into a room. A lead seal of Alexius Palaeologos, duke of Thessaloniki, was found in the filling of the southern wall. A small church of a cemetery, comprising three burials in its western part was found by the ruins of the bath. Tile-covered graves and pit-graves containing removals of relics were discovered east and west of the temple respectively. The church was built after the sack of Kitros by the Francs in 1204 and was destroyed some years later by the flood of the nearby stream.
