Rescue excavation at the building-ground of the new museum of Thasos

The rescue excavation, carried out in the area of the extension of the Archaeological Museum of Thasos, yielded parts of two houses (A and B) of the Greco-Roman type, situated west from the ancient Agora of the city. Part of a road leading from the citadelto the port was also discovered between the two houses. The houses were organized around a square courtyard, whose sides were equipped with stoai (porches) which led to the rooms of the house. Part of the courtyard and a stoa with a hearth and a well belonging to house A, and the courtyard, four rooms and parts of two others belonging to house B were excavated. Three building phases were detected: the first (4th-2nd century B.C.) was succeeded by two more which lasted from the 3rd to the beginning of the 5th century A.D., interrupted by a destruction in the middle of the 4th century A.D. The houses and the road were filled up with earth in order to solve the problem of the water-level. Similar examples of houses are found on the island. The finds of the excavation date to all the periods mentioned above. A few walls founded in the layer which covered the houses, are related to the buildings of the late Byzantine period of Thasos, when the island had been given to the Gatelouses (1416-1455)
