Agricultural products from the neolithic settlement Giannitsa B : a preliminary approach through archaeobotanical data

Abstract:
During the excavation of the archaeological deposits of the settlement Giannitsa B in 1991 (Gabrielides’ ground-field), soil samples were processed by the flotation method. The samples are from the abandonment of habitation phase I and the deposits of habitation phase II. Their process yielded archaeobotanical remains of cereals, pulses, fruits and weeds. The majority of the remains are carbonized, while there were also some phytoliths. The preliminary examination of the material yielded the following species Triticum monococcum, Triticum dicoccum, Triticum aestivum / durum, Hordeumvulgare var. hexastichum, Lens sp. Pistacia terebinthus /atlantica, Sambucus,Vitis vinifera L., Cornus mas L., Polygonum sp. / Rumex sp., Rumexsp.,Galium sp. / Asperula sp., Bugglosoides arvensis, Teucrium sp., Lolium temulentum/remotum, cf Bromus sp., Caryophylaceae. Triticum monococcum and dicoccum were used for the diet of the inhabitants of the Neolithic settlement. This is suggested by the discovery of the byproducts of the final stages of cereal processing and by the scattered existence of the respective grains. Triticum aestivum / durum, Hordeum vulgare var.hexastichum, Lens sp., Vitis vinifera L., Pistacia terebinthus/atlantica, Sambucusand Cornus mas L. probably also had the same use; however, the data do not imply it. In the future, we hope to be able to find evidence for cultivation practices during that period through the study of wild species. Furthermore, the samples of the products and the diet of Giannitsa B arevery similar to those found in the other Neolithic settlements of N. Greece, where Triticum monococcum and dicoccum prevail. The archaeobotanical material from Giannitsa B illuminates the study of the Neolithic diet, agriculture and agrarian economy of Macedonia
