Abstract:
The excavation at the ground-field of ex-Chortiatis Stoa, which occupies the whole building-block defined by Métropolites Gennadios, Egnatia and Menelaos of Thessaloniki streets was completed; all the findings were drawn together and led to the following conclusions about the topography and town planning of Thessaloniki.1) The movable finds from the ground-field at 10 Métropolites Gennadiosstreet suggest that the area is related to a sanctuary during the Hellenistic andthe Roman periods.2) A big villa urbana of the late Roman and early Christian period, was excavated at three ground-fields at 63, 65 Egnatia and 3 Menelaos street; its main entrance was located on Egnatia street and its secondary on Menelaosstreet.3) The iconoclastic church and the Byzantine phases of the ground-fields at 10 Métropolites Gennadios, 63 Egnatia and 3 Menelaos streets are not only located one near the other, but they are also related chronologically, since they date from the 10th to the 14th century. The late Roman villa was equipped with a courtyard in the northern part, a floor made of marble tessera and walls coated with a light red plaster, which was replaced by wall-paintings in the mid-4th century. The building was destroyed by fire in the early 6th century. A new house, which incorporated the walls of the earlier one, was built in the middle of the same century. Thelatter was destroyed by an earthquake in the mid-9th century and was abandoned. The repaired ruins of the building were finally incorporated in the complex of Prodromos Monastery whose church is identified with the iconoclastic church published by Evangelides
