Abstract:
In 1981 two Sub-Protogeometric vases were found by accident in the field of Pe- troyiannis at Malakonda about 4km NWof Eretria:1. a shallow bowl with conical foot, incurved shoulder and low straight lip; monochrome except for a reserved band between the handles including a simple design of vertical parallel lines.2. a kalathos with impressed triangles in five tiers and sets of bars on the reserved lip surface. The vases probably come from a woman’s burial, as the kalathos indicates, and seem to be products of a local workshop influenced by the contemporary major centers, esp. Lef- kandi. The bowl is rather unique in form and decoration and has no close parallels; it iscomparable to some slightly earlier examples of similar but not identical form and decoration from the cemeteries of lolkos (Kapakli) in Thessaly and of Lefkandi.Kalathoi with impressed triangles are very popular grave offerings at Lefkandi in l.PG and SPG I contexts; parallels are also found in Skyros and lolkos. The existence of a I.PG-SPG I cemetery certainly associated with a settlement (though rather contracted in size) between Lefkandi and Eretria and very close to the latter is of special interest.Eretria itself, according to recent finds, seems to have been founded at about this date (9th c. B.C.).
