Living between : identity and politics of a divided community

The area of Northern Greece is a region consisting of different cultural background populations living side by side. This paper examines the case of the Kra- siotes (pseudonym) population which was divided in 1926 in two parts. The majority «migrated» from their Bulgarian coast homeland into Greek Macedonia following the Treaty of Neuilly arrangments. A minority preferred to remain in their original settlement in Bulgaria. The focus is on the part of the population which «migrated» to Greece. Fieldwork was conducted in 1991-1992. The analysis is based on a transactionalist theoretical background.The research explores the relationship between the Krasiotes’ perceptions of their identity and the wider social and political contexts in which they belong. In Greece the Krasiotes live in the same settlement (today called Nea Krasia) with three other populations originally culturally different from them. In order to illuminate the dynamics of their identity, I examine the course of their relationship with other populations of Nea Krasia. The development of the relationship between the two parts of the Krasiotes community after its division is also taken into account. Special attention is given to the effects of the recent political changes in Bulgaria on the «revival» of feelings of belonging among the Krasiotes. Finally, the various ways according to which the Krasiotes present their differences from the «others», both in Bulgaria and Greece, are investigated. Perceptions of such differences include use of history, classification in well defined groups and contsruction of stereotypes.
