Three thesauraria from the numismatic museum of Athens

Three clay vessels, from the Numismatic Museum of Athens, which contained coin hoards, are published here. The first is from Ano Eleusina and is dated to the third quarter of the 12 th cent, (fig. 1, pi. 1 ) ; the second is from Mikro Elefterokhori near Elasson and is dated to the first quarter of the 13th cent. (fig. 2, pi. 2) and the third is from Livadi, also near Elasson, and is dated to the first decade of the 13th cent. (fig. 3, pi. 3 ).It is proposed that the term “ 0η-σαυράριον” (thesaurarion), known from the Scholia ad Aristophanem of Ioannis Tzetzes ( 12th cent. ), should be used with the sense of the entire find, as opposed to the. “ θησαυρός ” (thesaurus ), which only refers to the contents of the find : “ θησαυρός νομισμάτων ”( thesaurus or hoard of coins ) but “θησαυράριον άπό ή μέ νομίσματα” (thesaurarion of/or with coins ). By extension the vessel in which the hoard was hidden may be called a thesaurarion.
